Part-Time Inspecting ranks pay Update 27th June

Important information for inspecting ranks on part time contracts

The MPS initially agreed that Part time inspecting ranks who have to work beyond their contracted hours are to be paid at the unenhanced rate for the extra hours they work up to a 40 hours limit.

This change has come about as a result of a recently adjudicated employment tribunal case in which it was established that extra hours worked are to be counted as pensionable service.

The IBB are now opening negotiations in order to establish the principle that back pay is due.

Whilst these negotiations are ongoing our advice is that individuals to whom this applies should continue to submit a weekly duty variance sheets to their duties/Carm operators via their line managers for processing.

Additionally they should also begin gathering the evidence of the extras hours they have worked since becoming part time or 01.07.2000 whichever is the latter.

The MPS has recently issued guidance for Constables or Sergeants affected by this decision and understandably many of our members have raised concerns about the absence from this guidance of any mention of those within the inspecting ranks.

The current situation is this whilst PNB was in agreement regarding Constables & Sergeants, the Home Office and some forces, including the MPS which have now had second thoughts, viewed the situation in respect of inspectors as unclear. In particular issues relating to additional hours and the fact that inspectors do not qualify for enhanced overtime payments.

Whilst we strongly disagree that any matters are 'unclear' we did not wish to obstruct the agreement as far as our colleagues in the other Federated ranks are concerned.

Please be assured that our negotiations are continuing and we will of course update you as soon as there are any significant developments
