| The stance of the Metropolitan Inspectors Branch Board (IBB) with regard to Promotion. Promotion processes within the Met seem to be constantly evolving and we fully understand that frequent change leads to uncertainty, frustration & misunderstanding amongst candidates. It is apparent that promotion can no longer be viewed as a given and future processes are likely to be highly competitive. We would urge officers who are seeking promotion to understand this point and have a more realistic expectation of the timescales likely to be involved in achieving success. We regularly consult with those charged with devising and implementing the promotion proceedures and have provided feedback on the parts which we believe have been misused or counterproductive to the goal of producing a transparent method of selecting candidates. Independent of the MPS we are also conducting our own research with the help of colleagues on the National committee into the recently introduced Situational Judgement Questionaires(SJQ). We are of the opinion that SJQ's should not be used as a single filter process but can add value if used as part of a process. Having examined how these questions are formulated we are content that they comply with acknowldged best practice for selecting candidates for promotion. However their use is currentkly still under review by the MPS and our stance may change depending on how they propose to use them in the furure.
